Characteristics

Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina 6–14 x 3·5–7 cm., papyraceous to chartaceous, obovate to elliptic, pubescent to shortly pilose or almost glabrous, apex usually acuminate, margin usually crenulate, base cuneate and sometimes narrowed; lateral nerves 5–8 pairs, prominulous above, somewhat prominent beneath; petiole up to 4 cm. long, usually rather slender.

Fruit red or greenish-yellow, 2·5–3 x 1·5–2 cm., oblong-elliptic, glabrous, apex subtruncate and emarginate, base rounded to subtruncate, stipe 4–5 mm. long.
Inflorescences of axillary spikes 3·5–10 cm. long; rhachis appressed-pubescent; peduncle up to 3·5 cm. long, appressed-pubescent.
Small tree 7–17 m. high; bark dark-brown, fissured; branchlets tomentellous when young, glabrous with grey-brown fibrous bark.
