Characteristics

Small tree or shrub, up to 10 m. high; bark fissured; branchlets sericeous-tomentose to glabrous; bark purplish brown or purplish black, peeling off in strips to reveal a light brown newly exposed surface.. Leaves spirally arranged; lamina elliptic-oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, 7.5–12.5 cm. long, 2.5–3.5 cm. wide, apex acute or shortly acuminate, base cuneate to narrowly cuneate, sparsely sericeous when young but soon glabrescent; lateral nerves 10–16 pairs, slightly conspicuous above, rather inconspicuous beneath; petiole up to 2.5(–3.5) cm. long, rather slender.. Inflorescences of axillary spikes up to 11 cm. long; peduncle usually glabrous.. Flowers cream or white; upper receptacle glabrous or sparsely pubescent.. Fruit (fig. 12/10, p. 79) purplish brown, broadly elliptic, 4.5–5.5 cm. long, 2.5–3 cm. wide, apex obtuse to rounded and emarginate, base acute to subtruncate, glabrous; apical peg absent; stipe 5–7 mm. long.
