Characteristics

Small tree to 10(–13) m. high, or sometimes a shrub; bark grey-brown, deeply fissured; branchlets grey-brown, fibrous; young shoots tomentose, becoming glabrous.. Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina obovate-elliptic to elliptic, up to 8.5(–11) cm. long and 5.5(–6.5) cm. wide, usually smaller, apex rounded, very shortly acuminate, base truncate to shortly attenuate, pinkish brown and lanate beneath, indumentum generally persisting; lateral nerves 7–9 pairs, somewhat prominent beneath; petiole 1–3 cm. long.. Inflorescences of axillary or occasionally terminal spikes up to 8 cm. long; peduncle 1.5–3 cm. long, tomentose.. Flowers white to cream, fragrant; lower receptacle tomentose; upper receptacle pilose at the base, almost glabrous towards the apex.. Fruit brownish red, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 7–11 cm. long, 4–6.5 cm. wide, apex acute to obtuse, sometimes emarginate, base narrowed into the stipe, puberulous to almost glabrous, but never entirely so; stipe 3–5 mm. long.
