Small tree 3–5 m. high; bark black or grey, striate; branchlets becoming fibrous, whitish to purplish grey; long shoots straight, bearing numeroussmall spur shoots; lateral shoots irregularly arranged, sometimes opposite, subopposite or in whorls of 3, diverging at an obtuse angle, ending in a spur shoot, rarely in a spine and bearing numerous spur shoots.. Leaves borne on the spur shoots; lamina obovate or spathulate, up to 1 cm. long and 0.5 cm. wide, apex rounded, base cuneate, glabrous; lateral nerves 2–3 pairs, inconspicuous.. Inflorescences of slender spikes up to 1.5 cm. long, borne on the spur shoots; peduncle glabrous.. Flowers white, shortly pedicellate, glabrous.. Fruit reddish, ovate-elliptic, 1.8–2.5 cm. long, 1.2–1.8 cm. wide, glabrous, reddish, apex rounded, emarginate, base cuneate to subtruncate; apical peg absent; stipe up to 0.5 cm. long.
