Characteristics

Small tree 5–8 m. high; bark dark grey, smooth; branchlets fibrous, greyish brown to purplish grey.. Long shoots zigzag, with occasional spur shoots; lateral shoots irregularly arranged, diverging at an obtuse angle, ending in a spur shoot and with up to 2 lateral spur shoots; spines absent.. Leaves borne on the spur shoots; lamina obovate, up to 5.5 cm. long and 3.2 cm. wide (fide Griffiths), apex rounded, broadly emarginate, base acute to cuneate, glabrous to sericeous-pubescent; lateral nerves 4–5 pairs; petiole up to 10 mm. long.. Inflorescences of spikes up to 7.5 cm. long, borne on the spur shoots; peduncle tomentose.. Flowers cream; lower receptacle tomentose; upper receptacle sparsely pubescent.. Fruit yellowish purple, elliptic-oblong, 2.5–3 cm. long, 1.2–1.5(–2) cm. wide, finely puberulous; apical peg absent; stipe ± 4 mm. long.
