Characteristics

Small deciduous tree 3–12 m. high or shrub; crown flat to flat-rounded; bark grey-brown or blackish, shallow-fissured in diamond pattern; long shoots usually zig-zag; lateral shoots ending in a spur shoot with or without lateral spur shoots; spur shoots also borne occasionally directly on the long shoots; spines frequently present at the base of the spur shoots.

Leaves in fascicles at the ends of the spur shoots, petiolate; lamina pale-green to slightly glaucous, 1–2·5 x 0·7–1·2 cm., chartaceous, obovate to very narrowly obovate-elliptic, sparsely to densely sericeous-pubescent when young, glabrescent; lateral nerves inconspicuous on both surfaces; petiole 0·6–1·4 cm. long.
Fruit purplish, 1·5–2·5 x 1–1·2 cm., elliptic to oblong, glabrous, apex deeply emarginate, base cuneate to subtruncate, stipe 5–7 mm. long.
Cotyledons 2, 7–10 x 10–15 mm., subcircular to obovate or subreniform or flabelliform, borne above soil level; petioles 1–2 mm. long.
Inflorescences of lateral spikes 3–3·5 cm. long; peduncle 1–5 cm. long, glabrous.
Stamens 3–4 mm. long; anthers 0·4 mm. long.
Flowers white, glabrous.
Sepals triangular.
