Small tree 5–12(–20) m. high or shrub 4 m. high; bark dark grey to black, rough, lattice-like; branches densely tomentose when young, becoming glabrous with greyish brown fibrous bark and prominent leaf-scars.. Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 11–20 cm.long, 4.5–11.5 cm. wide, apex acute to rounded, base obtuse to rounded or subcordate, coriaceous, tomentose when young, ± glabrescent; petiole 1.5–5 cm. long.. Inflorescences of axillary spikes 10–16 cm. long; peduncle 2.5–4 cm. long, tomentose.. Flowers cream, strong smelling; lower receptacle tomentose; upper receptacle sparsely pubescent.. Fruit dark red or crimson, oblong to narrowly elliptic, (3–)4–6 cm. long, 2.4–3.5 cm. wide, apex obtuse to rounded, base obtuse to truncate, minutely puberulous; stipe 5–6 mm. long.
