Characteristics

Tree to 10 (–16) m high, deciduous. Branchlets appressed pubescent, glabrescent. Leaves usually crowded; lamina obovate or occasionally oblong or elliptic, usually 5–13 cm long, 3–7.5 cm wide, 1.3–2 times as long as wide, cuneate or shortly attenuate at base, usually recurved margin, obtuse at apex, discolorous, initially pubescent, at least some hairs on lower surface when mature; domatia rare; petiole 5–35 mm long. Spike open, usually longer than leaves. Flowers 3–5 mm long, 4–5 mm diam. Calyx pubescent outside, sparsely pilose inside; lobes triangular, c. 2 mm long and wide. Staminal filaments 3–5 mm long. Disc villous. Style villous. Mature fruit ellipsoidal or cylindrical, sometimes shortly beaked, 1–1.5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm diam., succulent, smooth, purple; immature fruit with 2 longitudinal ridges and sometimes winged at tip.
