Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina up to 18 x 7 cm., obovate or narrowly obovate or narrowly obovate-elliptic, usually rather coarsely brown-tomentose or brown-pilose (rarely pubescent or ± sericeous in specimens tending towards T. sericea), apex usually acuminate, base cuneate; lateral nerves 10–14 pairs, fairly conspicuous beneath as is also the reticulation, petiole 15–20 mm. long.
Small deciduous tree up to 9 m. high (up to 21 m. in Tanzania fide Wickens); bark dark-grey, deeply fissured; branchlets as in T. sericea.
Fruit purplish, up to 7·5 x 4·2 cm., broadly to narrowly oblong-elliptic, stipe 15–20 mm. long.
Lower receptacle densely tomentose, not sericeous; upper receptacle less densely tomentose.
Inflorescences of axillary spikes 10–14 cm. long; peduncle 4–5 cm. long, brown-tomentose.
Stamens 4–5 mm. long; anthers 0·7 mm. long.
Sepals triangular-acuminate.
Style 3·5 mm. long.
