Characteristics

Small tree up to 9(–21) m. high; bark dark grey; branchlets with purplish black bark peeling off in strips to reveal a light brown newly exposed surface.. Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina usually oblanceolate, less often obovate or elliptic-oblanceolate, up to 16(–18) cm. long and 5(–7) cm. wide, apex usually acuminate, long-cuneate, usually rather coarsely brown tomentose or brown pilose, rarely pubescent or ± sericeous in specimens tending towards T. sericea; lateral nerves 10–14 pairs, fairly conspicuous beneath, as is also the reticulation; petiole 15–20 mm. long.. Inflorescences of axillary spikes 10–14 cm. long; peduncle 4–5 cm. long, brown tomentose.. Flowers white; lower receptacles densely tomentose, not sericeous; upper receptacle less densely tomentose.. Fruit yellowish to reddish brown, broadly to narrowly oblong-elliptic, up to 7.5 cm. long and 4.2 cm. wide, finely tomentose; stipe 15–20 mm. long.
