Dioecious perennials (also see Phillipson & Steyn 2008), shrubby, 0.6-1.0 m high; stems woody, terete. Leaves shortly petiolate, small, ovate, 8-15 x 5-10 mm, base truncate, apex obtuse, margins crenate, thickened below; bullate-rugose and finely glandular-scabrous above, conspicuously veined and densely glandular-tomentellous beneath. Inflorescence coetaneous (maturing at same time) with leaves; 1-3 pairs of branches near base; terminal male flower-spikes dense. Flowers mauve or whitish; in whorls of 4-10. Calyx minute, campanulate; lateral lobes deeply toothed, seemingly 5-toothed. Corolla 3 mm long, 4-lobed; upper lobe emarginate, lowest lobe the longest. Disc with 1 lobe developed beyond ovary.
