Species

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Malpighiaceae > Tetrapterys

Characteristics

Liana, the younger stems densely hirsute, the pubescence usually apparently simple, stiff, translucent, more than 1 mm long, the longer trichomes often un-derlain with much shorter bifurcated trichomes. Leaves stiffly coriaceous, ovate or ovate-elliptic, abruptly acuminate at the apex, weakly cordate at the base, (7-) 20-23 cm long, (4.7-)11-14 cm wide, usually broadest near the middle, gla-brous above except sometimes weakly pubescent on the midrib in the lower 1/2 of the blade, sparsely pubescent throughout, below with erect bifurcate tri-chomes, much denser on the midrib, the trichomes chiefly bifurcate with one branch mostly longer than the other; major veins 6-10 pairs, moderately straight to curved, weakly loop connected; petioles 4-10 mm long, densely pubescent like the branchlets. Panicles terminal or in upper axils, the branches densely hirsute like the stems. Flowers not seen; fruiting peduncles 1.5-2.0 mm long, the pedicel articulation swollen, the pedicels 4-6 mm long, the bracteoles ovate, concave, hirsute to strigose abaxially, glabrous adaxially, peduncles and pedicels densely hirsute; calyx ovate, glabrous, rounded at the apex, ca. 2.3 mm long, the calycine glands oblong, ca. 3 mm long; ovary densely whitish hirsute-velutinous, the styles glabrous, ca. 1.6 mm long, dilated at the apex. Samaras pale brown, densely pubescent with sessile to stalked, patulous, T-shaped trichomes; lateral wings rigidly subcoriaceous, the superior wing oblong-obovate, 21-37 mm long, 10-17 mm wide, asymmetrically obtuse at the apex, scarcely or not at all confluent with the inferior wing, the latter 7-14 mm long, 5-7 mm wide, ovate to elliptic, con-stricted at the base, rounded at the apex; dorsal wing 2-8 mm high, suborbicular; seed ovoid, ca. 7 mm long, central areole 2.6-3.0 mm in diameter.
