Glabrous or nearly so; rhizome woody; stems 2 ft. long, acutely triquetrous, with nodes between the basal leaves and panicle; basal leaves numerous, nearly as long as the stem, 1/4 in. and more wide, but much rolled up when dry even at the base, long tapering; sheaths stout, not torn; stem-leaves similar to the lower bract but very much shorter; panicle 10 by 1 in., lax, thin, of 8-20 dull-brown spikelets; spikelets 1/3 by 1/8 in.; glumes ovate; keel green, hardly excurrent; lower flower male, with imperfect pistil; upper 2-sexual, perfect; hypogynous bristles very small, linear, smooth; stamens 6; anthers crested; nut (including its stalk) 1/6 in. long, ellipsoid, obscurely 3-(or 4-)gonous; style short, linear, branches 6 (or 8) long.
