Characteristics

Stems c. 250-800 mm long, erect or decumbent, often simple, sometimes corymbosely branched above, minutely glandular-puberulous, usually coarse spreading hairs as well, up to 0.5-1 mm long, to base of stem (these completely wanting in specimens from Makapan's Gat). Primary leaves up to 9-25(-30) x (1-)1.5-3(-5)mm, linear-lanceolate to narrowly oblanceolate, ± acute, gradually narrowed to a petiolar part, entire or a few tiny teeth, glandular-punctate, otherwise glabrous except sometimes a few minute hairs on lower surface at base of midrib. Flowers up to c. 14-25 in each partial inflorescence, crowded. Bracts up to 2.5-3.5 x 0.7-1.6 mm, glabrous except for a few hairs c. 0.2 mm long on margins. Pedicels up to 0.5-0.8 mm long. Calyx tube 1.5-1.8 mm long, posticous lobes 0.5-0.8 x 0.3-0.5 mm, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long on margins. Corolla tube 2.6-3.8 x 1.2-1.5 mm in throat, limb 3-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.6 x 0.7-1 mm, anticous lobe 1.2-1.7 x 0.8-1.1 mm, shades of blue and mauve, occasionally a white sport, clavate hairs all round mouth. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-1.8 mm long, anthers 0.4-0.6 mm, anticous filaments 1.2-2.2 mm long, anthers 0.4-0.6 mm Stigma 1.4-3 mm long. Style 1-2 mm Ovary 0.7-0.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm Capsules c. 1.5 x 1 mm Seeds c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm.

Leaves in approximate fascicles, lanceolate-linear, subacute, dentate above the middle with 2-4 pairs of teeth. Bracts lanceolate-linear, not concave. Flowers aggregate in a dense, corymbose panicle.
Leaves of main stem usually shorter than 20 mm, with blunt tip and blunt teeth, narrower than 3 mm. Spikes corymbosely arranged in compact heads. Corolla tube 3-4 mm long. Flowers white or mauve.
