Characteristics

Submerged herbs. Rhizome 3–6 mm diam.; internode 3–5 mm long; scales 10 mm long. Roots 2, hard, unbranched, 3–5 mm thick, with black surface. Leaf sheath 2–5 cm long; ligule 1 mm high; auricles obtuse. Leaf blade 7–30 cm long, 6–14 mm wide; margins denticulate; apex rounded, denticulate; longitudinal veins 15–19. Inflorescence enclosed by 4–6 leafy bracts, all but innermost bract with a ligule. Male flower with pedicel 5 mm long; anthers 20 mm long, each with a terminal appendage with a slightly bifurcate tip. Female flower: ovary ellipsoid, 1.5 mm long; style 2 mm long; stigmas 20 mm long. Viviparous seedling 5–8 cm long; with 3 or 4 seedling leaves; bract 5–7 cm long, 15–20 mm wide.
