Characteristics

Perennial herb up to 4 m tall, sometimes semi-scandent. Leaves up to 40 cm or more in length (including petiole), tripinnate to quadripinnate; leaflets elliptic to broadly ovate or oblate, often somewhat trilobed or with coarse rounded teeth, apex usually apiculate, base rounded to cordate. Inflorescence lax, many-flowered, some flowers male only. Sepals 1.5-3 mm long, green to purplish. Stamens 3-13; anther-thecae 0.8-1.7 mm long, prolongation of connective 0.05-0.5 mm long. Carpels 1-4. Stigma linear, 2-7 mm long at anthesis, covered with stigmatic papillae. Achenes up to 8 x 2 mm, asymmetric, flattened-fusiform, longitudinally striate, glabrous, tapering to the persistent stigma; pedicels elongating to 6-11 cm, hair-like.
