Characteristics

A scandent or semiscandent straggly shrub or small tree up to 12 m., but more commonly 3.5–7.5 m.. Twigs greyish-brown, sparingly lenticellate.. Young shoots fulvous pubescent, later glabrescent.. Petioles 2–6 mm. long, fulvous pubescent.. Leaf-blade elliptic-oblanceolate to elliptic-oblong, 5–15 cm. long, (1–)2–5.5 cm. wide, shortly obtusely to acutely acuminate, mucronate, rounded or rounded-cuneate at base, entire, chartaceous, lateral nerves 13–17 pairs, looped well within the margin, with a second and sometimes a third series of loops nearer the margin, tertiary nerves reticulate, scarcely prominent above, slightly so beneath, glabrous above, sparingly pubescent and evenly pubescent along the midrib beneath at first, later subglabrous and sparingly pubescent along the midrib, darker green and shinier above than beneath.. Stipules linear-lanceolate, 2–4 mm. long, sharply acute, strigillose.. Male racemes catkin-like, fasciculate, 2.5–3.5 cm. long, floriferous from the base; axis puberulous; bracts broadly ovate, concave, 1 mm. long, densely pubescent, 1-flowered, borne on the base of the pedicel, persistent.. Female racemes solitary or geminate, 1.5–2 cm. long, extending to 3.5–7.3 cm. in the fruiting stage, floriferous from the base or shortly pedunculate; axis and bracts ± as in the ♂ inflorescences.. Male flowers: pedicels 1 mm. long, sparingly pubescent; sepals elliptic-ovate, 1 mm. long, subacute, sparingly pubescent without, glabrous within, ciliate; petals narrowly oblanceolate-oblong, 0.75 mm. long, obtuse, sparingly ciliate, very fugacious; disc-glands obovoid, 0.5 mm. long, pubescent at the apex; stamens 2 mm. long, anthers minute, yellow; pistillode 1 mm. high, stipitate, suddenly dilated into a triangular plate at the apex with 3 conical papillae on the upper surface, one at each angle.. Female flowers: pedicels 0.5 mm. long, extending to 7 mm. in the fruiting stage, and becoming downcurved at the tip; sepals ± as in the ♂ flowers, but more densely pubescent; petals 0; disc 1 mm. diameter; ovary depressed-subglobose, 1 mm. long, 1 mm. diameter, pubescent especially in the upper half; styles 1 mm. long, sparingly pubescent to subglabrous..
