Characteristics

Leaf blades (0.5)1–3 × (0.3)0.5–1.2 cm, elliptic-obovate or elliptic-oblanceolate to oblong-spathulate, emarginate at the apex, cuneate-attenuate at the base, entire, slightly fleshy, glabrous on the upper surface, subglabrous or sparingly fulvous-pubescent along the midrib beneath, dark green above, paler beneath; lateral nerves in 2–3 pairs, sometimes scarcely visible, brochidodromous.

Male flowers: pedicels 1(2) mm long; sepals 1 × 1 mm, obovate, pubescent; greenish; disk glands 0.5 mm long, clavate, pubescent; stamens 2 mm long, filaments broad at the base, narrowing upwards, white, anthers 0.3 mm long, yellow; pistillode 1 mm high, turbinate, truncate.
Female flowers: pedicels 1 mm long; sepals 1 × 1 mm, oblong-ovate; disk 0.75 mm in diameter; ovary 1 × 1 mm, subglobose, minutely puberulous to subglabrous; styles 1 mm long, sparingly appressed-puberulous, cream-coloured, stigmas red.
A shrub. It can grow 2 m tall. The leaves are 1-3 cm long by 0.5-1.2 cm wide. Plants are separately male and female. The fruit are 4-5 mm long by 7-8 mm wide and have 3 lobes.
Stipules 1.5–2 × 0.7–1 mm, triangular-lanceolate, entire or fimbriate in the lower quarter, brown with a tawny midrib.
Branches straight, often ± fastigiate; twigs usually pale greyish-brown; young shoots evenly fulvous-pubescent.
Female inflorescences 1–1.5 cm long, extending to 2.5–3 cm in fruit.
Male inflorescences 1(2) cm long, axis densely fulvous-pubescent.
Fruit 4–5 × 7–8 mm, strongly 3-lobed, subglabrous, green.
A dioecious shrub up to 2 m high, but usually much less.
Seeds 2 × 2 mm, chestnut-brown, hilum white.
