Characteristics

Flowers initially solitary at tips of nude peduncles mostly 10–35 mm long (measured from axil of bract to first flower), soon overtopped by usually 2, rarely 3, nude or rarely scaly peduncles, arising immediately or shortly below flower, terminating in a flower, the bracteate peduncles with buds in the axils of the bracts, the branching repeated to produce a lax 9–15-flowered irregular cyme.

Perennial herb drying fuscous to reddish-brown, with a woody caudex up to c. 15 mm in diameter crowned with many short closely scaly shoots that elongate into stems c. 200–300 mm long, 1.25–1.8 mm diameter at base, erect, spreading, or prostrate, shallowly ribbed by decurrent scales, fastigiately branched, branches irregularly cymose, ascending at angle of 45°, mostly c. 50–120 mm long.
Leaves all reduced to scales, those at extreme base of stem 1–2 mm long, those subtending branches 2–3 × 1–1.6 mm, lanceolate, cuspidate, thick-textured, margins minutely erose-ciliolate.
Perianth colour unknown; tube 0.5–1 mm long, external glands obscure; lobes 1.1–1.5 × 0.4–0.7 mm, oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, hood c. 0.3 mm long, margins inflexed, erose.
Bracts c. 5 forming an involucre below the flower, c. 1–1.1 × 0.6–0.7 mm, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, cuspidate, margins very minutely erose.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments 0.3–0.5 mm long, almost hidden by anthers; anthers 0.4–0.8 mm long.
Style 1–1.8 mm long; stigma reaching nearly to top of perianth lobes.
Fruit 2.5 × 2–2.3 mm, palest brown, strongly ribbed and reticulate.
