Characteristics

Leaves ascending or spreading, c.12–45 × 0.8–2.1 mm, smaller upwards and on young branchlets, linear, very acute, apiculate, margins and midline sometimes very minutely scabridulous, these scabrid projections carried down the stems by the decurrent leaves, ventral surface flat, dorsal keeled by strongly raised midrib.

Herb, possibly annual or perennial, drying blackish or fuscous; stems tufted, up to 1 m long, sprawling, decumbent or sometimes erect (?), profusely branched, strongly ribbed to almost narrowly winged by raised vascular strands terminating in midribs of leaves and bracts, leafy.
Perianth whitish to yellowish within; tube 0.7–1 mm long, external glands obscure; lobes 0.8–1.3 × 0.4–0.6 mm, triangular, subacute, margins slightly inflexed, weakly fimbriate-erose.
Flowers 1–5 in small pseudoracemes terminating every twiglet (apical flowers the oldest), the whole forming a lax well branched panicle.
Stamens inserted at base of lobes; filaments 0.2–0.6 mm long, hidden by anthers to partly visible; anthers 0.3–0.6 mm long.
Herb. Leaves 10-20 mm long, erect or ascending. Edges of flowering branchlets distinctly scabrid. Pedicels 3-7 mm long.
Fruit 2.5–3.5 × 2–3.5 mm, brownish-buff, 5 ribs strongly raised, 5 less so, finely and distinctly reticulate.
Bracts (lowermost) 8–25 × 0.6–1 mm, leaf-like, adnate to entire pedicel; bracteoles 2, 4–7 × 0.4–0.8 mm.
Style 0.7–1 mm long; stigma reaching middle or top of anthers.
Pedicels (lowermost) 3–10 mm long.
