Characteristics

Bushy perennial herb fide collectors, underground parts not seen, drying dark red-brown; stems erect to c. 600–900 mm, less than 2 mm in diameter near base, simple below, virgately branched above, branches sharply ascending, very weakly ribbed by decurrent leaves, sparsely leafy.

Perianth “pale green” or “dull yellow”; tube 1–1.8 mm long, external glands inconspicuous, ellipsoid, as long as tube; lobes 1.5–2 × 0.5–0.75 mm, oblong, ± obtuse, margins inflexed, erose-lacinulate.
Leaves c. 7–14 × 1 mm but rapidly smaller upwards, sharply ascending, linear, almost acicular, nearly round in section, apex acute, apiculate, midrib invisible.
Flowers solitary, sessile in axil of each bract, c. 13–50 in crowded terminal spikes further arranged in a well branched panicle.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments 0.8–1.3 mm long, clearly visible; anthers 0.6–0.8 mm long.
Bracts c. 2.8–3 × 0.6–0.8 mm, leaf-like, ± spreading; bracteoles 2, similar to bracts but smaller.
Fruit c. 2 × 2 mm, light red-brown, ribs and reticulations lightly raised.
Style 1.7–2.5 mm long; stigma nearly reaching top of perianth lobes.
