Characteristics

A shrub or subshrub, stout, woody, erect, 12-18 in. high, much-branched, entirely glabrous; branches erect or subspreading, dense, intricate, more or less densely covered with flowers, ribbed or subangled; leaves scale-like, fleshy, broadly subrotund, with a thickened keel-wing at the apex; inflorescences more or less crowded; bracts and bracteoles broadly triangular, ovate, navicular, curved, abruptly subacute or acute, with a prominent fleshy keel at the apex, about 1/2 lin. long; bracteoles with membranous slightly fimbriate margins, 1/2-5/8 lin. long; male flowers: perianth 3/4 lin. long; tube well marked; segments ovate, obtuse or subacute, hooded, 3/8 lin. long; anthers 1/12 long; filaments 1/6 lin. long; style 1/4 lin. long, sometimes present, but no rudiment of ovary; female flowers: perianth 5/8-3/4 lin. long; segments 3/8 lin. long; disc well-marked; style stout, 1/6 lin. long; fruit sessile or subsessile, ovoid, 1-1 1/4 lin. long, 3/4-1 lin. broad with conspicuous ribs.

Female flowers with perianth tube shortly campanulate, lobes 4(5); disc obscure; staminodes rarely present; ovules 2 or 3, pendulous from apex of a central, straight or folded, filiform placenta; style short; stigma obscurely 2-or 3-lobed. Flowering time all year. Fruit a globose, 5-ribbed nut, conspicuously reticulated; fleshy basal ring crowned by persistent perianth; endocarp crustaceous; embryo terete in centre of fleshy albumen.
