Characteristics

A low erect shrublet, about 1 ft. high, branched from near the base or below the middle; branches erect, subterete, very finely spotted; leaves rather sparse, 1/2-1 in. long, linear-acicular, subacute, flat on the upper surface, rounded below, rigid, glabrous; flowers in numerous small capitate subcorymbose clusters; bracts ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, keeled, shorter than the flowers; bracteoles narrower and shorter than the bracts, with the latter often blackened; perianth 1 1/2 lin. long; segments ovate-elliptic, flat, hooded, 1 lin. long, with a dense tuft of apical hairs, margins and inner surfaces more or less hairy; anthers included in the tube, 1/4 lin. long; stigma sessile; fruits ellipsoid, contracted at the base, 2 1/2 lin. long, strongly 10-ribbed, distinctly reticulate between the ribs.
