Characteristics

Perianth probably creamy-white fading to brownish-yellow; tube 1–1.3 mm long, external glands inconspicuous, ellipsoid, as long as tube; lobes 4.7–6 × 0.7–1 mm at base, oblong, ± obtuse, deeply hooded, margins strongly inflexed, enfolding lower part of filaments, densely fringed with long white curled hairs.

Perennial herb drying dark red-brown or blackish, underground parts not seen, possibly one or a few stems from the crown, erect to 600 mm–1.5 m, c. 3 mm diameter at base, simple below, virgately branched above, branches rather sharply ascending, very weakly ribbed by decurrent leaves, sparsely leafy.
Leaves 2.5–23 × 0.8–1 mm, sparse and rapidly smaller upwards, ascending, linear, almost acicular, elliptic in section, apex acute, apiculate, midrib invisible.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments 4.3–5 mm long, partly adnate to perianth tube, very conspicuous; anthers 0.6–0.8 mm long.
Flowers solitary in axil of each bract, sessile, c. 8–22 in rather lax terminal spikes further arranged in a large, spreading, lax panicle.
Bracts 2–3.5 × 0.4–0.8 mm, leaf-like; bracteoles 2, similar to bracts but smaller.
Fruit 2.5–3 × 2.5–3 mm, light red-brown, ribs and reticulations lightly raised.
Style 4.8–5.8 mm long; stigma nearly reaching top of perianth lobes.
