Characteristics

Perennial herb drying blackish, clearly with a woody caudex (only fragment seen) crowned with very short closely scaly shoots giving rise to several stems c. 300 mm long, 3.3 mm diameter at base, possibly ± prostrate (horizontal fide Fanshawe), simple below, soon fastigiately well branched, ultimate branches spreading ± at right angles to axes, each branch articulated to a small cushion, young parts weakly ribbed by decurrent leaves, all stems laxly leafy.

Leaves at base of stem reduced to small scales, those subtending branches c. 6–10 × 1 mm, smaller on branchlets, spreading to ascending and often incurved, linear-subulate, slightly broadened at base, thick-textured, shallowly grooved on ventral surface at base, dorsal surface rounded, glabrous.
Perianth “greeny-white”; tube 0.7–0.8 mm long, external glands rather obscure, ellipsoid; lobes 1–1.1 × 0.5–0.7 mm, triangular, subacute, hood c. 0.3 mm long, margins inflexed, somewhat erose in lower half.
Flowers solitary, terminating short (c. 2–15 mm long) sparsely scaly spreading brachyblasts ± racemosely arranged, though the branchlet bearing brachyblasts may itself terminate in a flower.
Bracts 5 or 6 forming an involucre immediately below the flower, c. 1.3 × 0.7–0.8 mm, ovate-cuspidate, thick-textured, margins membranous, ciliolate.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments 0.3–0.4 mm long, hidden by anthers; anthers 0.4–0.7 mm long.
Fruit (immature) c. 3 × 2 mm (but possibly galled), ribs and reticulations strongly raised.
Style 1–1.4 mm long; stigma nearly reaching tip of hood.
