Characteristics

Perennial herb with woody caudex, whole plant drying black; stems many tufted from crown, c. 200–350 mm tall, virgately branched from base, strongly ribbed by raised vascular strands terminating in midribs of leaves and bracts, leafy.

Leaves ± ascending, main ones c. 25–50 × 1.2–1.8 mm, becoming smaller upwards and passing into bracts, linear-lanceolate to linear, acuminate, apiculate, base slightly narrowed, midrib raised on both surfaces.
Flowers in dichasial cymules, initially c. 6–7 cymules racemosely arranged at branchlet tips, peduncles soon elongating and buds developing to produce very open many-flowered dichasia paniculately arranged.
Perianth colour unknown; tube 0.6–1 mm long, external glands conspicuous, ellipsoid, about equalling tube; lobes 1–1.4 × 0.6–0.8 mm, triangular, very acute, densely white-bearded from apex.
Bracts (lowermost) c. 10–25 × 0.8–1.5 mm, linear, leaf-like, adnate to base of peduncle; bracteoles 2, lowermost c. 4.5–15 × 0.7–1.1 mm.
Stamens inserted at base of lobes; filaments 0.3–0.5 mm long, almost hidden by anthers; anthers 0.5–0.6 mm long.
Fruit 3 × 3 mm, light red-brown, distinctly ribbed and reticulate.
Style 0.5–0.8 mm long; stigma reaching base or apex of anthers.
Peduncles (lowermost) c. 3 mm soon elongating to c. 7–18 mm.
