Characteristics

Perianth “cream”, tube 0.3–0.6 mm long, external glands either wanting or represented by almost imperceptible points alternating with the perianth lobes; lobes 1.2–1.6 × 0.4 mm, subspathulate, apex subacute, hood c. 0.2 mm long, margins inflexed, margins sparsely fringed in lower half.

Probably annual; stems c. 300–400 mm tall, c. 1.5 mm in diameter at base, solitary, simple below, virgately branched above, branches sharply ascending, strongly ribbed by raised vascular strands terminating in midrib of scale leaves and bracts, distantly leafy.
Flowers sessile in axil of each bract, sometimes solitary, mostly up to 6 crowded on very short brachyblasts, arranged in long lax spiciform inflorescences forming a lax panicle.
Bracts c. 1.5–1.8 × 1–1.25 mm, ovate-acuminate, margins membranous, minutely erose-ciliate, keeled by strongly raised midrib; bracteoles 2, similar to bracts.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments conspicuous, 0.5–0.8 mm long, adnate at base to perianth lobes; anthers 0.2–0.3 mm long.
Leaves all reduced to scales, c. 0.8–1.2 × 0.4–0.6 mm, lanceolate, acuminate, closely appressed, midrib strongly raised on dorsal surface.
Fruit 1.5 × 1.5 mm, buff-coloured, strongly ribbed and reticulate.
Style 0.7–1.3 mm long; stigma reaching top of anthers.
