Characteristics

A bush, about 1 ft. high, everywhere covered with a very short puberulous indumentum; branches spiny at the tips, rigid; leaves adpressed to the stem, subulate-lanceolate, acute, with brownish-tips, 3/4-1 lin. long; flowers axillary, solitary, subsessile; bracts small and scaly, with subulate tips, very much shorter than the flowers; bracteoles subulate, cartilaginous, about 1/3 lin. long; perianth about 4/5 lin. long; segments 1/2 lin. long, ovate, subacute, with broad inflexed membranous flaps on the margins, glabrous; anthers about 1/4 lin. long, exserted from the perianth-tube; style 1/8 lin. long, conical; fruits ovoid-globose, 1 1/4 lin. long, bright green, 10-ribbed, slightly reticulate between the ribs.
