Characteristics

Stems few and slender from a slender rhizome, erect or suberect, often glaucous, faintly sulcate, glabrous; branches very sparingly leafy; flexuous and bearing scattered flowers over nearly their full length; leaves linear, subacute, 1/2-3/4 in. long, often adpressed to the stem, concave on the side next the stem, mostly glaucous, glabrous; flowers solitary in the bract-axils of lax spikes; bracts ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acutely acuminate, shorter than the open flowers, slightly warted outside, glaucous-grey; bracteoles nearly threequarters as long as the bracts and very similar to them but narrower; perianth with prominent external glands, infundibuliform, 3/4-1 1/2 lin. long, reaching to above the base or about the middle of the anthers; fruits broadly ellipsoid, 2 3/4 lin. long, prominently 10-ribbed, slightly glaucous and conspicuously reticulate between the ribs.

Leaves often appressed to stem; blade linear, 12-18 mm long, apex subacute, glabrous, glaucous. Flowers: in elongated, lax spikes, solitary in axils of bracts; bracts ovate or narrowly ovate, not adnate to peduncle, apex acutely acuminate, shorter than open flowers, outer surface slightly warted, glaucous-grey; perianth bearded, with prominent external glands, 1.5-2.6 mm long, segments elliptic, apices obtuse or subacute, hooded, 1 mm long, bearded, margins hairy, white; Sep.-Feb. Fruit broadly ellipsoid, 5.5 mm long, prominently ribbed, reticulate, slightly glaucous.
