Stems woody, rather numerous and erect from the apex of a many-headed woody rhizome, branched from near the base or in the upper part, conspicuously sulcate, glabrous, leafless; flowers borne on loose erect spikes, the latter forming a loose corymb; bracts scaly, much shorter than the flowers, broadly ovate, acute or acutely acuminate, 3/4-1 lin. long, keeled, with brown narrowly membranous margins, glabrous; bracteoles similar to the bracts but a little shorter; perianth 1 1/4 lin. long; segments triangular, acute, flat, 3/4 lin. long, with a dense apical woolly beard and hairy margins; anther included in the perianth-tube, 1/4 lin. long; stigma sessile or almost so; fruits slightly contracted at the base, ellipsoid-globose, 3 lin. long, 1 1/3 lin. in. diam., rather faintly 10-ribbed, scarcely reticulate between the ribs.
More
Dwarf shrub or shrub, 0.3-0.6 m high. Stems rush-like, erect. Leaves scale-like; blade ovate, 1-2 mm long, apex acute. Flowers: in lax, erect spikes, forming a loose corymb; bracts scaly, broadly ovate, not adnate to peduncle, apex acute or acutely acuminate, keeled, margins narrow, brown, scurfy or hyaline, glabrous; perianth bearded, 2.6 mm long, segments triangular, apex acute, flat with a dense, apical, woolly beard, margins hairy, white; Oct.-Dec. Fruit ellipsoid-globose, ± 3 mm long, faintly ribbed, scarcely reticulate between ribs.
Perennial herb with small branched woody caudex; stems 1–several from the crown, up to c. 450 mm tall, c. 1.5–2 mm diameter at base, simple at base, soon virgately branched, shallowly ribbed, ± minutely pustulate.
Leaves distant, all reduced to scales, c. 2.5 × 1 mm, linear-lanceolate, thick-textured, margins ± membranous and erose-ciliolate, erect, closely appressed to stem.
Bracts c. 2 × 1.7 mm, ovate-lanceolate, acute, thick-textured, margins membranous, erose-ciliolate; bracteoles 2, only slightly smaller than bract.
Perianth green outside; tube c. 1 mm long, external glands obscure; lobes c. 1.8 × 1 mm, triangular, densely white-bearded from apex.
Erect herb, up to 300 mm tall. Stems rush-like. Leaves ovate scales. Bracts broadly ovate, acute. Flowers white.
Flowers solitary in axils of bracts, ± laxly arranged in spikes, loosely panicled, c. 10–30 in each spike.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments c. 0.25 mm long, visible; anthers c. 0.5 mm long.
Fruit c. 3.5 × 3.5 mm, light red-brown, ribs lightly raised, reticulations weak.
Style none; stigma sessile, placenta twisted.
Pedicels wanting.
