Characteristics

Annual herb, 0.1-0.3 m tall, with slender, non-woody branched root system, vegetative scales absent from roots and lower parts of stems, stems 1 to 7 from rootstock, sub-erect or spreading with lower often decumbent, slender, branched, sulcate distally through decurrent leaves, terete below, green, moderately leafy (8 to 16 leaves per 50 mm at middle of stem). Leaves spreading, often recurved, linear, 5.0-27.0 x 0.3-0.9 mm, apex acute-acuminate and usually not cartilaginous, midrib raised on both surfaces, margins entire. Flowers solitary in bract axils, arranged in sparse 3 to 8-flowered monotelic racemose inflorescences; pedicels 0.0-2.0 mm long. Bracts linear-lanceolate, 3.7-6.0 x 0.3-0.7 mm, apex acuminate, margins entire, fused to entire pedicel; bracteoles 2.0-3.5 x 0.2-0.3 mm. Perianth 2.5-3.0 mm long, with elongate receptacle, 'glands' very rarely visible on outside; lobes linear or narrowly triangular, 0.8-1.2 x 0.2-0.5 mm, apex slightly hooded, with dense apical beard. Stamens inserted at base of tepals; filaments 0.2-0.3 mm long; anthers 0.3-0.4 mm long. Style 0.5-0.6 mm long, stigma ± opposite anthers. Placental column straight. Fruit stipitate, 3.0-6.8 mm long including persistent perianth (3.0-5.0 mm long excluding perianth), 1.8-2.5 mm wide, with prominent reticulate venation.
More
Herba ut videtur annua, circiter 10-20 cm alta, perianthio excepto omnino glabra, copiose ramosa, ramis primariis praesertim inferne exorientibus decumbentibus usque 30 cm longis ipsis iterum ramulosis, omnibus sulcatis viridibus vel primariis inferne brunnescentibus. Folia sparsa sed satis numerosa, linearia, plerumque 5-20 x 0.25-0.75 mm, apice attenuato-acuta sed haud rigida nec pungentia, supra canaliculata, viridia, haud vel angustissime pallide marginata, marginibus ipsis laevibus. Flores solitarii, ramulos terminantes, saepius cum 1-2 aliis lateralibus superne adjunctis sed inflorescentiam vix efformantes; flores in axillis bractearum sessiles vel subsessiles; bracteae lineares, 2.5-3 mm longae; bracteolae lineares, 2-2.5 mm longae. Perianthium extra glabrum; lobi 5, 1-1.25 mm longi, basim versus 0.7 mm lati, apice subcucullati et subacuti, intus apicem versus conspicue albido-barbati, pilis ipsis intus patentibus; tubus brevissimus. Antherae 0.4 x 0.5 mm, dorso perianthio pilis affixis; filamenta 0.2 mm longa, basi loborum perianthii affixa. Stigma minimum, apice styli distincti tenuis 0.3 mm longi positum. Fructus ellipsoideus vel subglobosus, circiter 2.5 x 2 mm, longitudinaliter costatus necnon inter costas reticulatus.
Herb, probably annual; stem c. 150–600 mm long, profusely branched from the base, prostrate to suberect, weakly ribbed by raised vascular strands terminating in midrib of leaves and bracts, laxly leafy.
Leaves spreading, 5–12(20) × 0.25–0.75 mm, passing imperceptibly into bracts, linear, apiculate, margins smooth, ventral surface plane, midrib scarcely raised, dorsal surface rounded.
Perianth probably greenish; tube 0.4–0.7 mm long, external glands small, ellipsoid; lobes 1.1–1.6 × 0.6–0.7 mm, triangular, subacute, densely white-bearded from apex.
Bracts (lowermost) 3.75–5.5 × 0.7–0.9 mm, leaf-like, adnate almost or quite to top of pedicel; bracteoles 2, 1.8–3 × 0.4–0.6 mm.
Stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes; filaments c. 0.3 mm long, almost hidden by anthers; anthers 0.3–0.4 mm long.
Fruit c. 3 × 2.6 mm, stipe c. 1.5–2 mm, yellowish-buff to red-brown (stipe pale), strongly ribbed and reticulate.
Style 0.3–0.6 mm long; stigma reaching about midway up anthers.
Flowers 2–4 in a lax raceme terminating each twiglet.
Pedicels 0.5–2.5 mm long.
