Characteristics

Roots fibrous. Leaves c. 5 to numerous, erect, often shallowly channelled, usually 15-40 cm, up to c. 1 mm wide. Peduncle about as long as the leaves, straight, unbranched, terminating in a 2-6(-12)-flowered cluster. Bracts with scarious margins, 2-4 mm long. Pedicels 1-2 cm, articulated in the basal third, erect in bud, usually spreading or recurving in fruit. Outer perianth segments (? always) green, with a scarious, white margin, 6-9 by 2-3 mm; inner segments pale blue to purple or light violet, with inturned usually fringed margins, 6-9 by 3-5 mm. Filaments 1½-2 mm, the outer whorl shorter than the inner; anthers 1.5-3 mm long, the outer shorter than the inner. Ovary c. 1 mm long; style c. 3-4 mm. Capsule oblong, 4-5 mm long. Seeds c. 1.5 mm long.

Umbel 4--10-flowered; bracts ovate or lanceolate, 3--5 mm, membranous. Pedicels 1--1.5 cm, articulate near base. Tepals blue, suboblong, 7--8 × 1--2 mm, membranous, 3--5-veined; inner ones sometimes fimbriate-denticulate at margin proximally. Stamens 4--5 mm; outer anthers ca. 1.2 mm, inner ones ca. 2.2 mm. Capsule ellipsoid, ca. 4 × 3 mm. Seeds subglobose, ca. 1 mm. Fl. and fr. Jun--Jul.

Inflorescence a single, 3–15-flowered umbel; scape 7–47 cm long, spreading to decumbent, occasionally erect; pedicels 10–25 mm long, articulated below middle, nodding in fruit. Perianth segments 5.5–10 mm long. Sepals linear to narrowly lanceolate, c. 2 mm wide. Petals ovate-elliptic, c. 6 mm wide; fimbriae c. 2 mm long. Stamens 6; 3 outer anthers 1.5–2.5 mm long, 3 inner 2.8–3.5 mm long. Style 2.8–4 mm long. Seeds not seen.
