Characteristics

Female flowers: pedicels 1 mm long, extending to 2 mm and becoming somewhat geniculate in fruit; calyx lobes 6, 1.5–2.5 × 0.5–1 mm, accrescent to 5 × 2 mm, the 3 inner calyx lobes becoming hardened and stramineous, the 3 outer herbaceous and green, each lobe 9–13(15)-lobulate, the lobules oblong-linear, ± perpendicular to, and shorter than the width of the calyx-lobe rhachis, shortly setose, green, the calyx-lobe rhachis lanceolate to oblong-loriform, minutely papillose-puberulous without, glabrous within; ovary 1.5 mm in diameter, 3-lobed, puberulous, shortly setose on the keels; styles 3, 3 mm long, erect, connate to over halfway, minutely puberulous, stigmas shallowly verruculose, straight, glabrous.

Leaf blade 2–8.5 × 0.2–2 cm, linear to lanceolate or narrowly triangular-lanceolate, acute or subacute at the apex, shallowly or remotely serrate to subentire on the margins, truncate or shallowly cordate at the base, thinly chartaceous, 5-nerved from the base, subglabrous or sparingly pubescent along the midrib and main nerves on both surfaces and otherwise ± glabrous, dark green on upper surface, somewhat glaucous beneath, sometimes reddish-tinged; lateral nerves in 4–5(7) pairs, not prominent above, scarcely to slightly so beneath.
Inflorescences up to 5 cm long, with a peduncle up to 2.5 cm long, terminal or leaf-opposed, bisexual with 1 female flower at the base, or some inflorescences entirely male; male bracts and female bracteoles 1–2 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate; male bracteoles 0.5 mm long, linear-subulate; female bracts 2–2.5 mm long, ovate, sometimes 3-dentate.
An erect, not or slightly urticating perennial herb up to 50 cm tall, monoecious; stems several from a branching woody rootstock, simple or sparingly branched, erect at first (in new growth following a burn) becoming drooping, trailing or twining at the top, puberulous and/or pubescent.
Male flowers: pedicels 1–1.5 mm long; buds 3-lobed to subglobose; calyx lobes 1.5 × 1 mm, broadly ovate, apiculate, glabrous, creamy-green or reddish tinged; stamens less than 1 mm long, yellow; pistillode triangular, the angles rounded.
Stipules 3–4 mm long, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, ciliate, otherwise minutely papillose-puberulous, erect or spreading.
Fruit 4.5–5 × 7.5–9 mm, 3-lobed, smooth, uniformly puberulous, and shortly setose especially on the keels, grey-green.
Seeds 3.5 mm in diameter, globose, brownish-grey with scattered greyish-white circular blotches.
Petiole 1–5(10) mm long, or leaves subsessile.
