Characteristics

A perennial, monoecious densely greyish to fulvous pubescent but sparingly setose twining herb.. Petiole 0.5–1 cm. long; blade triangular-lanceolate, 5–6 cm. long, 2–2.5 cm. wide at the base, acutely acuminate, fairly deeply and narrowly cordate, not or scarcely 3-lobed, serrate, firmly membranous, ± 7-nerved from the base, lateral nerves 3–4 pairs, not prominent above and scarcely so beneath, evenly to densely pubescent above, densely so beneath, with a few scattered stinging hairs above and beneath towards the base.. Stipules lanceolate, 5–7 mm. long, acute, entire, sparingly pubescent, erect at first, later reflexed.. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, 2.5–7 cm. long, the peduncles 0.3–3 cm. long, distally ♂ with 1–2 ♀ flowers below; axis densely pubescent; ♂ bracts linear-lanceolate, 2.5–3.5 mm. long, acute, entire, sparingly pubescent, reflexed and then upturned, 2–3-flowered; bracteoles linear, 1–1.5 mm. long; ♀ bracts lanceolate, 4 mm. long, with 1 or 2 teeth at the base, 1-flowered; bracteoles like the ♂ bracts.. Male flowers: pedicels ± 1 mm. long, puberulous; buds trilobate-subglobose, sparingly pubescent; calyx-lobes ovate-suborbicular to elliptic-ovate, 1.3 mm. long, 1–1.2 mm. wide, subacute, sparingly pubescent to subglabrous without, glabrous within; stamens 0.8 mm. long, filaments stout, anthers 0.5 mm. across; pistillode minute, trifid.. Female flowers: pedicels 1 mm. long, stouter than in ♂, pubescent, not extending in fruit; calyx-lobes 6, ± elliptic in outline, 2–2.5 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, accrescent to 7.5 mm. long and 4 mm. wide, with 6–7 linear to subulate lobules on each side, the lobules longer than the width of the rhachis, and a terminal lanceolate lobule being a continuation of the rhachis, the rhachis sparingly puberulous to pubes-cent without, glabrous within, becoming quite indurated in fruit, the lobules pubescent without, and setose on the margins and within, the rhachis stramineous, the lobules greenish; ovary trilobate-subglobose, 1.5–2 mm. diameter, densely setose on the keels, elsewhere puberulous to pubescent; styles 3, 1.5–2 mm. long, united for ± half their length, the free parts suberect, the stigmatic surfaces smooth.. Fruits roundly trilobate, 5–6 mm. long, 8–9 mm. diameter, evenly setose on the keels and uniformly puberulous.. Seeds 3.5 mm. diameter, pale yellowish grey, marbled chestnut.
