Stems erect or often twining and to 1.5 m, hirsute; lvs long-petioled, ovate or triangular-ovate, 5–10 cm, more than half as wide, acuminate, coarsely serrate, cordate at base; racemes numerous, lf-opposed, 3–6 cm; staminate fls with 3 sep and 3 stamens; staminate pedicel exceeding the bract, but deciduous from near the base; pistillate fls few, the cal 5-lobed; fr bristly, 10–15 mm thick. Rich soil of rocky woods or hillsides; s. Ind. to s. Mo., s. to Fla. and La. June–Aug. (T. macrocarpa)
