Characteristics

A perennial, monoecious, sparingly pubescent or puberulous and setose to subglabrous twining slightly glaucous herb up to ± 1.5 m. with several stems arising from a woody stock.. Petiole 0.7–4 cm. long, blade triangular-ovate, (1.5–)2–5(–7) cm. long, 1–3(–4) cm. wide, acute, fairly deeply and widely cordate, crenate to crenate-serrate or-dentate, firmly membranous to thinly chartaceous, 5–7(–9)-nerved from the base, lateral nerves 2–4 pairs, not or scarcely prominent above, slightly so beneath, sparingly hispid-setose along the midrib and main nerves above and beneath, otherwise glabrous.. Stipules triangular-ovate to-lanceolate, 3–4 mm. long, acute, entire, subglabrous, erect or patent.. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, 2–5(–8) cm. long, the peduncles 0.7–1.5(–3) cm. long, distally ♂ with 1–2 ♀ flowers below, occasionally some inflorescences all ♂, axis puberulous or pubescent and setose; ♂ bracts rhombic-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 1.5 mm. long, acute, entire, subglabrous, erect to patent and recurved, 1-flowered; bracteoles linear, 0.5–1 mm. long; ♀ bracts ovate, 2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, reflexed, otherwise as in ♂; bracteoles linear-lanceolate, 1.5 mm. long.. Male flowers: pedicels 0.75 mm. long, pubescent; buds compressed-ovoid, glabrous; calyx-lobes elliptic-ovate, 1.5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, cucullate, glabrous without and within, green; stamens 1 mm. long, anthers 0.3 mm. across; pistillode trifid, the segments dilated at the apex.. Female flowers: pedicels 1.5–2 mm. long, stouter than in ♂, puberulous, not extending in fruit; calyx-lobes 6, in 2 series of 3, those of the outer whorl elliptic-ovate in outline, with 9 triangular-lanceolate lobules, 4 on each side, those of the inner elliptic-lanceolate, with 7 lobules, 3 on each side, 2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, accrescent to 5 mm. long and 2.5–3 mm. wide, the lobules ± as long as the width of the rhachis, the rhachis subglabrous without, glabrous within, the lobules evenly setose on their margins, the rhachis yellowish with dark green veins, the lobules also dark green; ovary trilobate-subglobose, ± 1.5 mm. diameter, densely setose on the keels, elsewhere hispid and puberulous; styles 3, 1.5 mm. long, united for ± half their length, the free parts suberect and slightly recurved at the apex, the stigmatic surfaces ± smooth.. Fruits trilobate, 4 mm. long, 8 mm. diameter, evenly to sparingly setose on the keels, otherwise sparingly puberulous.. Seeds 3–3.5 mm. diameter, greyish brown, streaked and flecked with dark reddish brown, and here and there with paler grey circular patches, each with a densely papillose margin.
