Characteristics

An erect, sparingly or moderately branched monoecious densely pubescent urticating perennial herb up to 55 cm., but more commonly 30–35 cm., with a woody root-stock.. Petiole 1–4(–10) mm. long; blade lanceolate to triangular-lanceolate, (2–)3–9(–13) cm. long, (0.7–)1–2.5(–4) cm. wide, acute, rarely subacute or obtuse, cuneate, rounded or occasionally truncate, less often shallowly cordate, serrate-denticulate, rarely subentire, membranaceous, 3(–5)-nerved from the base, with the inner pair of basal nerves often reaching halfway up the blade, lateral nerves 3–6(–7) pairs, the tertiary nerves forming a fairly prominent reticulate network beneath, sparingly to evenly pubescent above, evenly to densely so beneath, especially along the midrib and main nerves, and also with urticating bristles along the midrib and main nerves beneath.. Stipules ovate to lanceolate, (2–)3–6(–7) mm. long, acute or subacute, sparingly pubescent to subglabrous.. Inflorescences terminal on the main stem or on lateral shoots, sometimes also leaf-opposed, 4–10(–25) cm. long, the sparingly to densely pubescent peduncles 1–5(–13) cm. long, usually ♂ with 1–3 ♀ flowers at the base, sometimes all ♂, rarely all ♀; ♂ bracts elliptic, 2 mm. long, acute, shallowly and irregularly denticulate, hispid-pubescent, 1(–2)-flowered, persistent; ♀ bracts up to 3 mm. long, otherwise as ♂; bracteoles linear-oblanceolate, 1–2 mm. long.. Male flowers: pedicels 1.5 mm. long, sparingly pubescent; calyx-lobes 3, elliptic-obovate, 1.5 mm. long, 1.25 mm. wide, cucullate, glabrous or subglabrous, green or yellowish green; stamens 0.75 mm. long, filaments slender, anthers minute, yellow; pistillode trilobate, flat, granulate.. Female flowers: pedicels 1–1.5 mm. long, stout, densely pubescent; calyx-lobes 6, unequal, 2 being broader than the other 4, ± oblong in outline, 1.5 mm. long, extending to 6–8 mm. long and 1–1.5 mm. wide in fruit, the rhachis lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, pinnately lobulate, with 2–4(–5) linear lobules on each side, the rhachis and lobules sparingly hispid-pubescent without, glabrous within, greenish without, stramineous within; ovary trilobate, 1.5 mm. diameter, densely setose; styles  3,2.5 mm. long, united for half their length, puberulous without, the stigmas recurved, their surfaces minutely papillose.. Fruits strongly trilobate, 5–6 mm. long, 1–1.2 cm. diameter, smooth, sparingly pubescent, evenly setose, more densely so on the keels, greenish.. Seeds 4 mm. diameter, greyish buff, flecked and blotched with dark purplish brown, and with irregularly spaced pale circular areas fringed with white papillae.. Fig. 57.
More
Female flowers: pedicels less than 1 mm long, extending to 2–3 mm long in fruit; calyx lobes 6, unequal, 1.5 × 1–1.5 mm, with 2 being broader than the other 4, accrescent to 4.5–6 × 2–3 mm, each lobe (7)9–13-lobulate, the lobules linear to linear-lanceolate, longer than or equalling or shorter than the width of the calyx-lobe rhachis, sparingly pubescent and/or shortly setose, green, the calyx-lobe rhachis loriform or elliptic-lanceolate, sparingly puberulous to subglabrous without, glabrous within, becoming hardened and stramineous proximally, remaining ± herbaceous distally; ovary 1–1.5 mm in diameter, 3-lobed, densely setose; styles 3, 2–3 mm long, extending to 4–5 mm long, ± erect, slightly divergent, connate for one-third of their length, later for almost three-quarters of their length by the extension of the column, subglabrous; stigmas minutely verruculose, recurved at the tips.
Leaf blade 4–12 × 1–2.5 cm, narrowly triangular-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, acute or subacute at the apex, serrate to denticulate on the margins, rounded or cuneate at the base, thinly chartaceous, 3(5)-nerved from the base, with the inner pair of nerves often running more than halfway up the blade, sparingly pubescent and also hirsute and setose along the midrib and main nerves on both surfaces; tertiary nerves reticulate; lateral nerves in 3–7 pairs, scarcely prominent above, fairly prominent beneath.
Inflorescences up to 11 cm long, with a peduncle up to 6 cm long, either terminal on the main stem and/or on the axillary leafy shoots or else leaf-opposed, bisexual, mostly male with 1–3 female flowers at the base; male bracts 2 mm long, lanceolate, ciliate; male bracteoles 1–1.5 mm long, linear; female bracts c. 3 mm long, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, sometimes 3-dentate to 3-fid; female bracteoles resembling the male bracts, but slightly larger.
