Characteristics

Wiry vine, up to 4 m long, monoecious. Stipules lanceolate, 1.8–3 mm long. Petioles 3–42 mm long. Leaves with stinging hairs, lamina lanceolate to ovate, 15–115 mm long, 5–80 mm wide; base auriculate to almost sagittate; margins serrate with 10–21 teeth; tip acute to acuminate, lateral veins 7 or 8 per side of midrib. Male flowers: pedicels 0.8–4 mm long; sepals lanceolate-ovate, 1.8–2.2 mm long; stamens 3–5. Female flowers: pedicels 0.4–1.8 mm long; calyx lobes lanceolate, 1.4–2.5 mm long; styles 1.8–2.5 mm long, connate in lower half, long recurved. Fruit 4–5 mm long, 7–9 mm diam. Seeds 3–3.5 mm diam.
