Characteristics

A scandent monoecious pubescent intensely urticating shrub.. Bark grey.. Petioles (2–)5–11 mm. long; blades elliptic or broadly elliptic, (2–)3–5(–5.5) cm. long, (1–)2–4 cm. wide, shortly acutely acuminate, shallowly narrowly cordate or cordulate, sharply dentate, denticulate or bidentate, the teeth patent, firmly membranaceous, 3(–5)-nerved from the base, lateral nerves 3–6 pairs, slightly prominent above, prominent beneath, tertiary and quaternary nerve-network ± reticulate, also prominent beneath, sparingly setose above, evenly to sparingly pubescent and setose along the midrib and main nerves beneath.. Stipules lanceolate, 3–4.5 mm. long, acute, sparingly pubescent, later glabrescent.. Inflorescences leaf-opposed on short lateral shoots, (1.5–)2–4 cm. long, shortly pedunculate or not, mostly ♂ with 1 apical or 1–2 basal ♀ flowers; axis pubescent, with a few gland-tipped hairs near the bases of the bracts; ♂ bracts obovate-spathulate, 2–3 mm. long, obtuse, entire, ciliate on the margins at the base, otherwise ± glabrous, 1-flowered; bracteoles linear-oblanceolate, 1–1.5 mm. long, otherwise resembling the bracts.. Female bracts broadly rhombic-obovate, 2 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, denticulate, bracteoles obovate, otherwise as in ♂.. Male flowers: pedicels 2–3 mm. long, sparingly pubescent to subglabrous; buds subglobose, constricted below the middle; calyx-lobes rhombic-ovate, 1.5 mm. long, ± 2 mm. wide, cucullate, glabrous, green; stamens minute, filaments very short, anthers 0.5 mm. across, included in the short calyx-tube; pistillode shallowly trilobate, flat.. Female flowers: pedicels 2–2.5(–3) mm. long, stouter than in the ♂ flowers, pubescent; calyx-lobes 6, 2.5 mm. long, extending to 4–5 mm. long in fruit, obovate in outline, with 1–2(–3) pairs of lobules on each side, and with a suborbicular foliaceous terminal laminula, pubescent and puberulous without, ± glabrous within, green; ovary trilobate, 2 mm. diameter, evenly setose; styles 3, fused into a subglobose column more massive than the ovary, with an apical depression, stigmas ellipsoid, cushion-like, recurved, adpressed to the top of the column.. Fruit trilobate, 5 mm. long, 8 mm. diameter, ± smooth, puberulous, pubescent and setose.. Ripe seeds not known.
