Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Triainolepis

Characteristics

Weak shrub or rarely a small tree, 1.8–6 m. tall; branches pubescent or covered with dense white hairs, later glabrescent.. Leaf-blades elliptic, narrowly ovate or elliptic-lanceolate, 3–11.5(–16) cm. long, 1.2–5.7 cm. wide, narrowly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, almost or completely glabrous to densely adpressed pubescent above, more or less velvety beneath with ± white hairs, particularly along the main nerves so that they stand out against the rest of the surface; petioles 0.5–1.7 cm. long; stipules with ovate or triangular bases 1–4 mm. long, with 0–7 (usually 3) unequal subulate fimbriae 0.5–4(–6) mm. long, mostly with distinct colleters.. Inflorescences hairy, up to 4 cm. across; peduncle 0.35–2.2 cm. long; pedicels 0–2.5 mm. long.. Calyx-tube 1–1.5 mm. long; limb-tube 1–2.4 mm. long; lobes 0.3–2.9 mm. long, 0.2–1.3 mm. wide.. Corolla with pale green to white tube and white limb; tube 0.7–1.05 cm. long; lobes 3.5–5.5 mm. long, 1–2 mm. wide, the inner and outer layers usually so demarcated that the outer appears as a distinct horn up to 0.6 mm. long.. Anthers half-exserted in long-styled flowers, well exserted in short-styled flowers.. Style 1–1.25 cm. long in long-styled flowers, 4.3–5.5 mm. long in short-styled flowers; stigma-lobes 6–8, 0.9–2 mm. long.. Drupe white at first, turning dark red, subglobose, 4–6 mm. in diameter when dry, ± 8.5 mm. when fresh, ribbed (at least in dry state); putamen depressed-subglobose, 4–5 mm. in diameter, grooved, ± hairy.. Seeds pale brown, narrowly oblong-ellipsoid, 2–2.4 mm. long, 0.9–1 mm. wide, 0.5–0.6 mm. thick, often with the undeveloped collateral ovule stuck to the testa.
