Characteristics

Tree up to 35 m. or more tall; bole straight; buttresses absent or very short; bark grey-brown or black, rough, sloughing in small scales.. Leaves up to 26 cm. long; leaflets 9–15, lanceolate, up to 14 × 4 cm., tapering from near the base to the narrowly acuminate apex which is often curved to one side, lower surface glabrous or almost so.. Inflorescence a little-branched axillary panicle up to 12 cm. long.. Calyx 0.3–0.35 cm. long, divided almost to the base; lobes ovate to subcircular, pubescent.. Petals 1–1.2 cm. long, pubescent.. Staminal tube 0.5–0.7 cm. long.. Capsule subglobose, ± 3 cm. in diameter, shallowly 2–3-lobed, tomentellous; valves with indistinct longitudinal wrinkles; stipe up to 1.5 cm. long.. Seeds black, almost completely concealed by the orange-red aril.
