Characteristics

Evergreen tree usually 10–15(–25) m. tall, sometimes flowering as a shrub; bole fluted; bark rough, peeling easily.. Leaves up to 25 cm. long; leaflets (5–)7–9(–11), usually drying a dull grey-green, elliptic or oblanceolate-elliptic, up to 18 × 6.5 cm., apex shortly and bluntly acuminate, base cuneate, lower surface glabrous with indistinct venation.. Inflorescence a much-branched congested panicle, usually less than 7 cm. long, in axils of leaves or of fallen leaves.. Calyx 0.2–0.3 cm. long, puberulous, lobed to the middle, lobes deltate.. Petals 0.4–0.8 cm. long, puberulous.. Staminal tube 0.5–0.7 cm. long.. Capsule globose, ± 2 × 2 cm., glabrous, slightly sulcate, not or scarcely wrinkled; stipe absent.. Leaves imparipinnate; petiole and rhachis up to 20 cm. long, glabrous; leaflets up to 18 × 6·5 cm., opposite or alternate, 3–4-jugate, distal leaflets elliptic or oblanceolate-elliptic, apex shortly and bluntly acuminate, base cuneate, upper surface drying a dull grey-green, glabrous, lower surface with indistinct nervation, glabrous; petiolules up to 2 mm. long.
Filaments completely united, staminal tube 5–7 mm. long, entire except for minute irregular teeth alternating with the anthers, sparsely and minutely puberulous outside and in the upper half inside; anthers 0·75 mm. long, not apiculate; antherodes smaller, not producing pollen.
A shrub or small tree. It grows 3-20 m high. The trunk is fluted and has buttresses. The branches are often low down. The trunk can be 1-2 m around. The crown is dense and spreading. There are 2 subspecies.
Flowers pale green or white, fragrant, borne in much branched congested cymes in axils of leaves or of fallen leaves; peduncles up to 1·5 cm. long; pedicels 2–3 mm. long.
Capsule c. 2 × 2 cm., globose, slightly sulcate, surface smooth, not or scarcely wrinkled, glabrous, opening by 3 (4) thinly woody valves.
Style 2–3 mm. long, minutely puberulous; style-head scarcely wider than the style, obscurely 2–3-lobed at the apex; ovules collateral.
