Characteristics

Leaves imparipinnate, with 1–5 leaflets; petiole and rhachis up to 5 cm. long, densely puberulous; leaflets up to 10·5 × 2·8 cm., variable in shape, obovate, oblanceolate or elliptic to very narrowly elliptic, apex rounded to acute, base usually cuneate, lower surface puberulous with fine appressed hairs.

Filaments 4–5 mm. long, united for about 1/2 their length, puberulous outside, bearded at the throat inside. Appendages scarcely 1/8 as long as the anthers; anthers 1·75 mm. long, apiculate; antherodes smaller, not producing pollen.
Fruit 1·8 × 1·8–2·2 cm., obovoid-globose, very shortly stipitate, with a stipe up to 3 mm. long, dull red, slightly sulcate, surface transversely wrinkled, fulvous-tomentellous, opening by 3 (4) valves.
Ovary 3 (4)-locular; ovules collateral; style 4–5 mm. long, densely setulose along entire length; style-head coroniform, obscurely lobed.
Flowers dull white, in 2–5-flowered subsessile cymes in axils of leaves, or in axils of fallen leaves towards the base of the stem.
A shrub with dense branches. The leaves are compound with leaflets along the stalk and one at the end.
Calyx 1·5–2·5 mm. long, tomentellous, lobed almost to the base, lobes imbricate, subcircular.
Disk completely fused to the base of the staminal tube, densely setulose.
Pistillode scarcely expanded at base but with vestigial ovules.
Petals 5–7 mm. long, tomentellous outside, puberulous inside.
Seeds without an aril but with a fleshy orange testa.
Rhizomatous shrublet up to 30 cm. tall.
