Characteristics

Evergreen shrub or tree up to 10(–18) m. tall; bole often crooked and fluted near base; bark grey-brown, fairly smooth, flaking in thin strips.. Leaves up to 30 cm. long; leaflets 9–17, drying reddish brown, oblanceolate or oblanceolate-elliptic, broadest in upper half, up to 20 × 8 cm., apex shortly and acutely acuminate, lower surface usually puberulous on the midrib and lateral nerves.. Inflorescence a rather condensed panicle up to 24 cm. long.. Calyx 0.2 cm. long, lobed almost to the base; lobes deltate to subcircular, pubescent.. Petals 0.4–0.7 cm. long, puberulous.. Staminal tube 0.25–0.45 cm. long.. Capsule ± 2 × 2 cm., deeply 2–3(–4)-lobed, the valves transversely wrinkled; stipe absent.. Seeds black; aril orange-red.
