Characteristics

Shrub 0.3–1.6 m. tall; young stems with sparse short adpressed tubercle-based setae, the older with peeling grey epidermis revealing chestnut bark beneath.. Leaf-blades narrowly oblong-elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 2–6.5 cm. long, 0.25–1.6 cm. wide, bluntly acute at the apex, the actual tip very narrowly rounded, narrowly cuneate at the base, covered with short adpressed hairs from circular base of cystoliths; petiole 0.2–1 cm. long.. Inflorescences 2–8-flowered, 1–3 cm. long; bracts robust or lowest flowers in axils of reduced leaves; pedicels ± 1–2(–3 in fruit) cm. long, ± glabrous or sparsely adpressed setose.. Sepals broadly ovate, up to 1.4 cm. long, 9.5 mm. wide, shortly acuminate at the apex, rounded to slightly cordate at the base, enlarging in fruit to 2.2 cm. diameter, ± round and distinctly cordate, shortly adpressed setose when young and with puberulous margins.. Corolla white with orange-brown marks below the sinuses; tube 1.2–1.3 cm. long, broadest at the middle, narrowed at base, densely hairy inside near insertions of the filaments, the lobes broadly triangular, 2–5 mm. long, 3–6 mm. wide, reflexed or not, acuminate.. Anthers not in a distinct exserted cone, 6 mm. long, narrowed above into linear connective-appendages 5 mm. long; anther glabrous save for apical part and lower part of connective-appendages both of which are densely long-pilose; tips of appendages glabrous for 1–2 mm., at first twisted.. Ovary 1 mm. tall, 3 mm. wide, ± 4-lobed; style subulate, 8 mm. long, tapering above.. Nutlets 4, compressed ovate, ± 6 mm. long 4.5 mm. wide and 1.5 mm. thick, glochidiate, the marginal glochidia broader and ± joined together to form a serrated crest; inside smooth save for a marginal ring of short setae..
