Characteristics

Dioecious, apparently annual, glabrous. Tendrils 2–branched. Leaves ovate, cordate at base; lamina 7–15 cm long, 7–16 cm wide, unlobed, denticulate, acuminate, coria–ceous, glossy; petiole 4–10 cm long. Male flowers: mostly solitary, rarely in few-flowered racemes on peduncles 7–8 cm long; pedicels 6–8 cm long; bract lanceolate, 12–20 mm long; hypanthium 5–7 cm long; calyx-lobes narrowly triangular, 10–14 mm long; corolla-lobes obovate, 22–28 mm long; fringe to 20 mm long. Female flowers on pedicels 2–5 cm long; hypanthium 3–4 cm long. Fruit ovoid to ellipsoidal, 9–14 cm long, 6–9 cm diam., broadly ribbed, orange-red; flesh yellow, pulp red; pedicel 2–5 cm long. Seeds many, ovate, truncate to irregularly oblong, 14–18 mm long, compressed, 2–horned at base, brown.
