Characteristics

Perennial; stems to 15 m long, glabrous. Tendrils 2-or 3-branched. Leaves 3-foliolate or pedately 5-foliolate; petiole 4–7 cm long; leaflet lamina ovate or obovate, 4–11 cm long, 2–7 cm wide, attenuate at base, entire or dentate, acuminate, coria– ceous, glabrous but scabrid with scale-like cystoliths when dry, paler beneath; lateral leaflets oblique or bilobed at base; petiolules 5–12 mm long. Male flowers not seen. Female flowers: hypanthium 30–35 mm long; calyx lobes lanceolate, acuminate, 5–7 mm long; corolla lobes ovate, 12–14 mm long; fringe to 10 mm long. Fruit ellipsoidal or ovoid, 5–7 cm long, 3–5 cm diam., glabrous, red; flesh yellow, pulp slimy, dark green. Seeds many, ovate, truncate, 12–14 mm long, compressed, smooth, dark brown.
