Characteristics

Stems to several metres long, pubescent with uni-and multicellular hairs. Leaves broadly ovate or suborbicular, cordate at base; lamina 4–12 cm long, 5–17 cm wide, shallowly to deeply 3–5-lobed; lobes triangular to ovate, sinuate-dentate, acute or obtuse, pubescent on both sides, often velvety brown beneath; petiole 2–10 cm long. Male flowers in 4–8-flowered racemes, pubescent, 12–20 cm long; peduncle 10–16 cm long; bracts 20–25 mm long, dentate; pedicels 1–2 cm long, rarely solitary; hypanthium 30–45 mm long, villous outside, brown; calyx lobes 10–15 mm long; corolla lobes obovate, 18–25 mm long; fringe to 25 mm long. Female flowers on pedicels 6–8 cm long. Fruit ellipsoidal, truncate, 8–12 cm long, 6–9 cm wide, broadly ridged, glabrescent. Seeds ovate, 9–12 mm long, compressed, smooth, or finely pitted, buff; margin broad.
