Characteristics

Leaves crowded at the top of the stem, erect to spreading, somewhat discolorous (paler beneath), more or less densely scabrous on both surfaces, rarely subglabrous when young, finally glabrescent, sessile; midrib and lateral nerves slightly raised on the inferior surface with longer hairs than the areas between the veins.

Flowers 2–7(9) per raceme, heterostylous; peduncles 2–14·5 cm. long, with white patent hairs and patent yellowish setae, the latter 0·5–1·5 mm. long and somewhat dilated towards the base; bracts 1–4 mm. long, subacuminate; pedicels 6–16(18) mm. long, patently hairy and setose.
Capsule 1·5–3 × 0·3–0·5 cm., fusiform-trigonous, tapering to both extremities, sometimes slightly falcate, with smooth faces and raised ribbed angles, glabrous or puberulous, at a right angle or oblique to the peduncle; beak 2–4 mm. long.
Styles of the longistylous flowers 14–16 mm. long, exceeding by c. 4 mm. the anthers of the longest stamens; styles of the brevistylous ones 8·5–10 mm. long, not reaching the anthers of the shorter stamens.
Petals 25–40 × 10–18 mm., broadly obovate-cuneate, usually bright orange (somewhat paler on the abaxial surface), sometimes yellow.
Stamens unequal, the 3 longer ones 14–16 mm., the other two 12–14 mm. long; anthers c. 1·75 mm. long.
Calyx 12–18 mm. long, greenish, pubescent and shortly setose; lobes 5–8 mm. long, linear.
A perennial herb with a long, thick, straight or contorted woody rootstock.
Ovary 4–5 × 1–1·5 mm., ellipsoid, acute, puberulous or subglabrous.
Stems 1 to few, usually short to almost absent.
Fruiting pedicels recurved, accrescent.
