Characteristics

Leaves all similar, lanceolate and up to 12 × 4·5 cm., or elliptic and up to 8·5 × 3·7 cm., subacute, obtuse or rounded at the apex, shallowly crenulate-serrate, provided below the middle with 2 pairs of subopposite blunt lobes, the basal lobes rather smaller, usually all with a blackish sessile gland at the apex as that of the apex of the lamina, membranous, slightly discolorous, hispidulous, all sessile or the lower ones very shortly petiolate.

Calyx 11·5–13 mm. long, patently hairy on the outside; tube c. 9·5 mm. long, hairy inside below the insertion of the petals; lobes c. 3·5 mm. long, oblong, subacute.
Longistylous flowers: filaments of the longer stamens 7–8 mm. long, those of the shorter ones 5·5–6 mm. long; anthers 2–2·5 mm. long; styles c. 8 mm. long.
Flowers 6–11 per raceme; peduncles up to 30 cm. long, hispid and very sparsely setose; bracteoles 1–2 mm. long; pedicels 2·5–3·5 mm. long, hairy.
Stem up to 1 m. high, erect, simple or branched, more or less hirsute and with very sparse yellow or brownish setae swollen towards the base.
Brevistylous flowers: filaments of the longer stamens 8–11 mm. long, those of the shorter ones 6·5–9 mm. long; styles 3·5 mm. long.
Petals 19–20 × 3 mm., bright scarlet, slightly paler abaxially; ligules acute.
Capsule up to 5·5 cm. long; beak up to 6 mm. long.
Ovary 3 × 0·4 mm., oblong, linear, glabrous.
Seeds 2–2·5 mm. long.
