Characteristics

Leaves 2·5–11·5 × 1–3 cm., ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, attenuate towards the acute apex, cuneate at the base, more or less incised-serrate to subpinnatifid, the teeth or segments again serrate, the main ones with a terminal seta (rarely the lower leaves very small, 0·6–1·1 × 0·3–0·55 cm., oblong-ovate, obtuse, entire), membranous, darkening on drying, densely hairy on both faces, more so on the nerves, the midrib also setose towards the base; petiole up to 1 cm. long, hairy like the stem.

Ovary 3·5–5 mm. long, hairy; styles 10 mm. long and subequalling the longest stamens in the longistylous flowers or 3 mm. long and shorter than the shortest stamens in the brevistylous flowers.
Stem branched to simple with a double indumentum of soft, whitish, shining hairs and of more or less dense, yellowish, spreading, up to 1 mm. long setae with swollen, blackish base.
Flowers 2–5(7) per raceme, heterostylous or homostylous; peduncles 2–10 cm. long; pedicels 3–6 mm. long, not deflexed in fruit; peduncles and pedicels hairy like the stem.
Filaments of the longest stamens (7)9–13 mm. long, those of the shorter ones 5·5–10 mm. long; anthers c. 2·3 mm. long.
Capsule 3–6 cm. long, erect on straight pedicels, shortly and patently hairy; beak up to 6 mm. long.
Calyx 10–15·5 mm., patently hairy and with weak setae; lobes 2·5–5 mm. long, oblong, subobtuse.
Petals up to 23 × 12·5 mm., obovate-cuneate, yellow to orange.
Annual, erect herb up to 40 cm. high.
